Why A Balanced Diet Can Still Make You Overweight or Obese

Balanced Diet and ToxinsDo you think a “balanced diet” can’t make you overweight or obese? If so, you are not alone.  A lot of people believe that.  Even with a balanced diet, you could still gain weight over time.  There are two reasons for this.

First, the term “balanced diet” is apparently nebulous to most people in westernized countries.  In the United States, even though most people know that they should get at least 5 to 9 servings of vegetables and fruit each day, very few actually do it.  In reality, most people really do not get a balanced diet even though they may think they eat pretty well.  In fact, most make poor food choices and have sporadic exercise or no exercise at all.  Poor food choices very often are a consequence of poor daily meal planning.  But there may be more than poor food choices and lack of regular exercise to explain the relatively worldwide increase in overweight and obesity.

The second reason is stated in the following excerpt from the 2002 article in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine1:

The commonly held causes of obesity – overeating and inactivity – do not explain the current obesity epidemic…  Because the obesity epidemic occurred relatively quickly, it has been suggested that environmental causes instead of genetic factors may be largely responsible.

In other words, the underlying reason may be environmental toxins, such as pesticides, plastics and other potentially hormone-altering chemicals contributing to this worldwide “obesigenic” trend.

There are people who are unable to lose weight even though they regularly do the following:

  • exercise effectively
  • eat nine or more servings of vegetables and fruits each day
  • eat only one or two servings of whole grains daily
  • eat two servings of beans and legumes per day
  • eat one to two servings of meat, poultry or fish
  • avoid smoking, sugar and any processed food or “fast food”
  • manage stress well
  • get adequate, deep sleep at appropriate times

If this describes you, I recommend you get tested for hidden toxins in your body.  A Certified Clinical Nutritionist, Naturopathic or Functional Medicine doctor, or other similarly trained holistic health doctor can order various special tests for detecting toxins in your body.  Besides ordering the tests for you, he or she will likely have the training and experience for safe and effective detoxification programs to eliminate the stored toxins in your body.

Only then will a balanced diet help you from being overweight or obese to having  a healthy body weight.
