“Diobesity” is the term used to describe the epidemic of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Diobesity is widespread (pun intended!) in the U.S. and many parts of the world today. During the winter months, the processes involved in developing and aggravating diabetes and obesity are often exacerbated. Those processes are:
- Lack of sufficient sunlight with dangerously low vitamin D levels in the blood – Many studies have now established that proper levels of vitamin D are critical for prevention of hormonal disruptions associated with pre-diabetes and obesity, (or weight gain). Getting your serum vitamin D (25-OH-D) levels measured through blood tests and using sufficient amounts of supplemental vitamin D to bring your level to between 40 and 80 ng/ml is a simple preventive measure.
- Development of “SAD” – Seasonal Affective Disorder, which affects about 25% of the population with about 5% at severe levels. It is a form of depression that commonly begins in September, and peaks in the months of January and February. It often involves sleep disturbances, fatigue, adrenal gland dysregulation, weight gain or development of obesity, and diabetes or pre-diabetes (better known as insulin resistance). What’s the solution for not getting SAD? Getting your vitamin D levels measured and supplementing with sufficient vitamin D.
- Having a SAD diet – The Standard American Diet, which is also abbreviated SAD, has high amounts of processed grains and sugar, high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, low levels of omega-3 fatty acids, and insufficient vegetables, fruit, beans, legumes and nuts. Americans often go for convenience rather than planning and preparing meals and snacks. Maintaining the SAD diet will predispose you to diabetes and obesity.
- Poor daily detoxification – During the cold, rainy winter months, people are indoors for the vast majority of the day. As discussed in a previous blog on detoxification, detoxification from environmental exposures such as carpet out-gassing, paints, and cleaning products is necessary for preventing storage of fat. Making every effort to enhance your body’s own detoxification processes is critical, particularly in the winter months.
I encourage you to prevent diabetes and obesity, by increasing your vitamin D especially during the winter months, having a healthy diet, and practicing a lifestyle that enhances detoxification and going on a detox program periodically.

Keep up the good work Eileen!
In some diabetic patients the symptoms include loss of weight in addition to thirst, tiredness etc. When the glucose fails to enter the cells, the body starves for energy and the starved cells use fat and protein and this leads to weight loss.
. Awsome blog, and awsome information. I run a site myself in danish- just about Vitamin D. I seems like you have found your niche, but with a little antispam function and tweaks on the graphics and interface, it could be even nicer. My niche is Vitamin D – It seems like the officials are not interested in a healthier population, since Vitamin D is not pre- added so fx. milk or other foods. In the nothern europe more than 60 % of the elder are ind Vitamin D deficiency, and surely as a cause of that, in a bigger risk of developing cancer, osteoporosis, and many other deseases.
That was all I had to say. Hope you will keep up the fine work.
If you feel tired, exhausted and stressed out all the time, and suffer from an achy body, bloated stomach or feel that you do not have the energy to go through the day, chances are that you need to detox your body. A detox can improve your overall health significantly, and help alleviate all kinds of symptoms we deal with in the often toxic world we live in today. Detox and chiropractic, they are good for you!
Exercise is an absolutely essential factor in controlling diabetes, and without it, you’re unlikely to get this disease under control. Exercise is one of the fastest and most powerful ways to lower your insulin and leptin resistance.
